VPI Reveals Most Common Pet Names of 2013

For the second year in a row, “Bella” and “Max” reign as ‘top dogs’ as the modern-day monikers led the list of most common dog and cat names in the VPI database in 2013. We determined the most popular pet names after sorting through our database of more than 500,000 insured pets. Following are the top 10 most common names for dogs and cats:

In 2012, “Bella” topped both the most common dog and cat name list with “Max” coming in as the second most common moniker in the VPI database. The majority of the names that made the top 10 dog and cat lists also made the list in 2012. Names that are trending upward include “Coco” and “Lola” among dogs, and “Jack,” “Luna” and “Milo” for cats.

While human names continue to dominate VPI’s pet name popularity, there are plenty of pet owners who opt for a moniker of the less conventional variety, such as “Sir Knuckles da Dragon” and “Cheeto Burrito.” To view some of the more creative monikers selected for VPI’s Top 10 Most Unusual Pet Names of 2013, visit
